Rug & Kilim
Hand-knotted in wool, 3x12 runner rug circa 1920-1930, R&K Principal Josh Nazmiyal believes this to be a European take on Persian rugs—most likely originating from Ireland. On the Design: Admirers of the craft may note an inspiration from Heriz Karaje rugs—named in particular for the small town known for this style. Its play of medallion and all over style attests, as does its play of rich and vibrant colors together. Here, rich red underscores bright blue and beige-brown towns in detailed patterns quite keeping with the regal beauty of this Persian inspiration. The curvilinear floral patterns in the central border is emboldened by a beige background, lending dimensionality between the field and the wrapping blue geometric border with its expansive, intricately woven pattern. It’s a collectible work from one of R&K Principal Jahanshah Nazmiyal’s favorite provenances—that being rare works of European and Oriental confluence that makes such unique works as this. This rug is one of the most wonderful plays of Oriental sensibility and European style together, playing the two into a look that’s unique to every one of them, but arguably never more unique than in this masterpiece. Condition:This antique European Heriz runner rug further enjoys great condition for its age and origin, and is ready for the floor.

Lavender Oriental Carpets
This carpet is a fine example of the eccentric and imaginative Serapi quality Heriz carpets woven at the end of the 19th century. The attractive madder red field has lobate corner extensions and centers a blue outer medallion enclosing ivory, red and salmon layered six lobed irregular motives. At the very focus is an octagon of several pile colors. The field and corners display a geometric formal vine with blossoms and floral elements. The main border, in palest pistachio green, employs the popular rosette and bent leaf pattern in a rendition characteristic of the late 19th century. The rug is of medium weave with a flat back and has an all-cotton foundation with symmetric pile knotting. There are no other Serapi Heriz carpets of the period resembling this unusual example, indicating that it is the imaginative artistic creation of a gifted master weaver rather than one who followed a pre-existing design. The overall effect is unquestionably bold and striking. This carpet enhances both formal and more rustic decorative schemes, and it works especially well in contemporary settings.

The central panel, in shades of soft blues and pinks, creates a harmonious and happy feel, that is accentuated by the dark blue corner spandrels and soft ivory main border. The Heriz district of NW Persia has been weaving carpets for over a century, with geometric designs and tonalities ranging from mellow to saturated. Medallion layouts are by far the most common, but the semi-stylized versions of classic all-over Persian patterns are found. Blues range from navy to powder and reds go from tomato to buff. The foundations are cotton, and the knots are always symmetric (Turkish). This Heriz has a character all its own and will become a natural focal point in any setting.
