A lion rests majestically on rustic terrain framed by a floral medallion at the center of this magnificent antique Ukrainian carpet. The medallion in this beautiful antique rug is set amidst an open field framed only at the upper and lower edges by thin garlands. While the design and coloration draw upon the grand repertoire of antique French Savonnerie carpets, the all-wool foundation and weave show that it was made in the Ukraine under the Czars as an imperial Russian counterpart to Savonnerie production. The proud, noble face of the lion is unusually expressive for pictorial rugs and textiles of this sort, perhaps adding a distinct Russian or Ukrainian touch.
A lovely allover design of red leaves complemented by blue rosettes and star flowers repeats symmetrically across the soft ivory tan ground of this lovely antique American Ingrain textile. The side borders consist of flowering vases arranged in series, while the upper and lower borders have sprays of roses. despite the variation in motifs across the antique coverlet textile, the piece has strong visual and decorative unity because of the constant alternation between forms in red and blue. The arranged of the field elements also suggests circular medallion like forms in the reserved ivory ground, amplifying the ornamental richness and effect of the piece. The inscription in all four corners of this magnificent antique American coverlet textile states that it was made by John Kachel for Elizabeth Fry in he year 1859.
Here is a truly unique antique tapestry - an antique tapestry that was woven in the United States of America around the turn of the twentieth century. While the art of tapestry weaving is a centuries-old tradition in Europe, it is a craft that has only rarely been practiced in the USA. This is one of the things that makes this amazing antique tapestry a truly magnificent example. Signed with a subtle “B NY” near the lower left-hand portion of the composition, this antique textile features a beautiful, classical depiction of a garden, with a comely building of pink standing slightly off-center in the background. The richness of the detail here is difficult to overstate: Impeccably woven trees and flowers dominate the piece, but everything that has been included in the composition is also precisely drawn. The overall effect that this antique tapestry achieves is one of deep and lingering beauty. It superficially resembles a painting but bears all of the hallmarks of an expertly woven tapestry. A unique and beautiful work of art, this antique tapestry from the turn of the century America is a miraculous example.
