Combining the clean, unadorned lines of the International Modernists with organic and geometric forms, the Catalina Collection is suggestive of the works of America’s Mid-Century Modern designers. The years following WWII were a time of uncertainty but also of great hope and progress. Designs of the period reflected that sense of hope and the promise of an ideal future. In our current period, one finds comfort and nostalgia in Catalina’s s retro-modern shapes and sensibilities. The Catalina Collection is crafted in solid American black walnut or cherry.

A legitimately beautiful piece of furniture. However... The drawers are much shallower than they look from the outside. The way the dresser carcass is made, there are two wooden reinforcement bars running along the underside of the top and along the topside of the bottom. That means all of the drawer boxes are about an inch shorter than they could otherwise be (the top drawer because it has to fit under the top bar, the bottom drawer because it has to fit above the bottom bar, and the other two because they have to match their respective partners above and below). The whole dresser would have significantly more storage volume (at least a couple more cubic feet) if those bars were omitted, which would allow the top two drawer boxes to extend upward and the bottom two to extend downward. Given that the dresser carcass has long stretchers running almost the entire length of the dresser on the bottom (with the feet), the internal reinforcement bars on the bottom seem especially redundant. And because the bars are screwed in (from the inside), they create weak points in the carcass. When I was moving the dresser, a piece of the top literally broke off in my hand, failing along a line that went through one of the screws attaching the bar to the top. I found after removing all of the screws that either the top or the reinforcement bars was slightly bowed, so when the pieces were screwed together, it put the top under stress, in particular near the ends. Perigold was excellent at getting a replacement dresser ordered and sent. But these reinforcement bars should 100% not be necessary if the top and bottom are attached properly to the side and middle pieces of the dresser.. Anonymous. . 2024-07-19 20:50:49
