This antique Sultanabad rug was woven during the late 19th century and features a traditional rust color palette as well as natural-inspired design elements. The most striking and vibrant aspect of this extra-large oversized rug is the bright rust color tone that is present in the interior design of the central field. The curving vine and leaf-inspired designs stand out against this rust color due to their creamy ivory and fresh green tones. These curving lines draw the eye along the rug, creating an eye-catching centerpiece that is added to by the presence of beautiful floral elements. The border of this magnificent antique rug is a darker color, making the cream-colored lines stand out in a bold and eye-catching way against this rich dark ground. The patterns in the border of this rust-colored Sultanabad rug are natural-inspired elements as well, with shapes reminiscent of leaves or feathers making their home among small flowers and lighter-colored vines. On either side of the border with the dark ground, there are two smaller stripes which each feature a pattern of their own. The addition of these secondary borders gives the rust-colored Sultanabad rug a dynamic feel as well as making it look extremely elegant. The two patterns within this antique oriental rug work together beautifully to create a stunningly elegant work of art.

Hand-knotted in wool originating from India circa 1890-1900, this antique rug employs a unique Tabriz Persian rug style unlike almost anything in our collection with this much emphasis on intricate pictorial motifs. Most notably our team has seldom seen an antique Tabriz rug with this preference of both human love and animal pictorials, let alone prevailing in the border as the dominant motif as in this subtle homage to neoclassic cartouche patterns. The juxtaposition of these depictions with the more animal-focused, less symmetrical pictorials—ranging from horseback warriors, lions, stag and deer, and bird depictions create an entirely unique sense of movement that draws the eye in such a pleasing allure. This apt control highlights the range of amazing and varied blue, pink, red, green, and gold colorways prevailing against the more forgiving beige-brown field and the likewise gentler tones of green in the floral patterns, all elements remarking a distinctive approach negotiating the sensibilities of both the European and Oriental rug market for an iconic Persian rug look for this period. Connoisseurs will note the emphasis of contrasting subtexts of war and love depicted in the field and border respective, connoting a fascinating variety of cultural interpretations ranging from hunting, marital, and royalty allusions in an ideal condition. Designers will further note the subtle cream and pink radiance in the beige colorway in considering this magnificent selection for projects welcoming opulence in an area rug.
