The Golden Ginkgo collection takes its inspiration from the intricacies of form and texture found in foliage from around the world. By interpreting plant forms in cast metal, Aram presents work that is evocative of a natural environment transformed and redefined. "These pieces have wonderfully undulating leaves, which create an almost rococo surface of playful, delicate, and intricate forms. By combining the individually sculpted leaves, the natural forms join to create a complex pattern. I've tried to capture that sense of movement and fragility in metal."

The Palm collection is inspired by the beauty of a windswept Palm tree and the perfectly imperfect shapes of woven Palm leaves and fallen fronds. The warm antique gold finish and the intricate sculpted textures exude comfortable luxury and graciousness. "I was having lunch with friends on a veranda overlooking the sea when I looked down to the lawn and saw a fallen Palm frond. The leaves were all twisted and curled, yet they stood out magnificently against the otherwise perfect landscape. It made me think of the passage of time, and the bountiful gifts of the Palm tree, which provides everything from food to shelter."

The texture of hammertone is an ancient surface treatment for metal that is achieved through the painstaking application of hammer marks, one by one, to shape the metal into various forms. The resulting surface texture is vibrant, faceted, and as contemporary as it is timeless. "While the immediate narrative in this motif is not as obvious as most of my work, it has just as much meaning. This texture speaks to me of everything I love about Indian hand craftsmanship... rich with the presence of the maker's hand, complex and beautiful, and highly symbolic of human endeavor."

The Reflective collection takes its inspiration from the mystical and serene symbolism associated with aquatic imagery. "My emotional response to water is very strong - heightened by the extreme sensations surrounding the smell, sound, sight, and touch of the aquatic world itself. Water-related images provide me with a sense of peace and balance. As the tides roll in and out, as the sun rises and sets, the landscape of water also changes and evolves. There is a universe in, under, and around the water which has its visual vocabulary."

The Heart collection is built around the simple but universal symbol of love, hope, friendship, and caring. The shape of the heart creates instant responses in us all and carries a world of meaning that changes according to the intent of both the giver and the recipient. In Aram's version, the classic motif is interpreted through ancient techniques of handcraftsmanship. "These heart pieces are all unique as they are hand forged and cut. There is an individuality to each object, just as our hearts and expressions of love are different from person to person, from moment to moment. I imagine that as we use these simple objects, they serve as nostalgic mementos of love."

Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the ginkgo Biloba, or Butterfly Ginkgo, which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of Indian craft and capture the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work. The first time I saw this tree, it looked like it had been completely overtaken by butterflies...as if we would all take flight the moment I walked too close or made a noise. The idea that the leaves could evoke the beauty of butterflies was magical to me, like trees that can metamorphose from flora to fauna in the blink of an eye.

This was a gift for a daughter whose own daughter just got engaged. I felt she’d love having a small photo of the happy couple on her desk. At the same time, the textures represent a metaphor for life itself – growth, vitality, and pulsation. Everybody has an emotional response when we see natural objects. We are part of all of us. What I enjoy about these pieces is that in a way we are 'slices' of nature, small vignettes of the forest. It is fascinating to imagine the outside world infiltrating my interior spaces as if the room is being gently consumed by nature."
