F. Elizabeth Douglass has been painting professionally for the last sixteen years. She received her Arts Degree from Auburn University and has studied at The Scottsdale Artist School in Arizona and The University of Stranierei in Perugia, Italy. F. Elizabeth largely works with acrylic paints on a range of materials. “I prefer acrylics because they can be combined with a lot of water to achieve the movement and spontaneity that I want in all of my work.” Her subjects range from natural scenes and figures to abstracts. “I don’t want to be pigeonholed as a specific ‘kind’ of the painter. I love all aspects of art and I am continually looking for and learning new concepts, techniques, and styles.” Hailing from segregation-era Birmingham, Alabama, the civil rights movement of the ’60s formed her core belief: there are many beautiful colors in this world, we must appreciate them equally.” The Deep South still holds a powerful attraction for the artist, drawing her back to her roots time and again. Elizabeth counts Monet as an influence for his play of light and washes of color in addition to Watercolorist Dean Mitchell and John S. Sargent and the soft marine scapes of Homer.
