A skull opens to reveal a living face in this intriguing mask from Mexico. "Part represents life, part represents death. This exemplifies the ancient Mesoamerican concept of duality," artisan Angel Cerón explains. Day and night, hot and cold, dark and light — this thought was present in almost all philosophical and religious ideas, extending as far south as the Andes. "I was inspired by a mask found in Tlatilco, in the State of Mexico. However, my version is quite different," the artisan says.

Although born and raised in Los Angeles, Artist Van Garrett has been heavily influenced by traveling abroad to a multitude of countries, especially Iceland. Music is a big part of his life and it sparked his creativity even before he began painting. In fact, Van did not begin painting until he was in college and he is self-taught. “Art was something that was always in my genes. It makes me happy. I believe that every artist leaves a piece of themselves in their artwork. In turn, it makes me happy when people get to own part of those pieces to share with the world.” Van prefers working in liquid acrylics and watercolors because of their fluidity. “I like how the colors flow. I like to observe how the different shapes and mixtures come alive.” Van finds animals, humans, and nature are his favorite subjects to paint. He is inspired by nature, people, and music. When not painting, Van runs marathons, travels, and plays the guitar.

By Angel Ceron, this frightening figure depicts Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec god of death. Represented as half man, half skeleton, he makes a menacing gesture with long, claw-like nails, and his liver hangs from the thoracic cage. The artisan works in clay to replicate an image discovered in the House of the Eagles within the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan, an archaeological site in Mexico City.
