Design Concept:The standalone crystal flower piece from the Peaceful Existence collection is a curious and seemingly diminutive variety of flower presented in glasswork. Its charming disposition declares its own uniqueness. The moth orchid, sculpted here in vivid hues of red with golden undertones, is believed to accompany the arrival of good fortune in classic Chinese literature. The flower is contrasted with its base—a lovingly familiar shape reminiscent of the full moon, and in full bloom, it mimics a moth under a light opening its wings to take flight. The messenger of good luck and fortune is polished to perfection and boasts immaculate color-placement techniques that are signature of LIULI studio artisans. Viewing oneself through flowers and the world through a vase is an ancient Chinese philosophy. Through the purity of the moth orchid, we see the intrinsic goodness of the heart.
The crystal hibiscus flower sculpted here possesses a unique personality. Achieved through the technique of pate-de-verre and twice-firing, this design is one of the most challenging pieces because the petals are large and layered, and each step in the process needs extra effort to secure. For example, in the refining wax form, every micro inch and subtlety plays its own role in the grand scheme of beauty and they require tens of injection points for liuli ingredients for exact color placement. Because the hibiscus flower is one of only a few that bloom in late fall—when many flowers wilt—the Chinese have long since admired the survivor for its conviction. As if guided by the chilling autumn draft, the petals of this flower remain uplifted—fearlessly radiating its colors when all others have faded. This highly limited art piece by Loretta H. Yang reveals beneath a pond-like reflection scripture from the infamous Heart Sutra. Through the refraction of light and shadow, a pool of clarity is revealed, resulting in enlightenment. See through it all to let go of distracting thoughts. The depicted plant is the houseleek, a perennial succulent and what Buddhists call a “thousand-leafed lotus”. With every fallen leaf, a rosette forms. This means “to change past wisdom”, the metaphorical transformation of one’s weaknesses into lotuses.
Joyous Guanyin is one of the thirty-three manifestations of the bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokiteśvara). Seated in a comfortable posture, quietly gazing upon a small lotus, her leisurely posture is an expression of contentment and ease. The calm and centered countenance of Joyous Guanyin has an edifying effect on sentient beings, subtly reminding us that even when life is at its bumpiest, there is still much goodness and beauty to be found, even in a single flower, and that we can see it by relaxing and letting go. The lotus is an important symbol in Buddhism, for it is the only plant that has flowers and fruit at the same time, making it a symbol of the dual cultivation of wisdom and compassion. Moreover, its roots, flower, and fruit coexist, symbolizing the past, present, and future.
