The Natural Light
Starfall is a classically proportioned five-pointed double star. Gathered at a high waist of the lamp, five slender, tapered arms extend up as if reaching for the sky while five tapered legs splay downward, appearing to float just above a tabletop or floor. Slight and delicately crafted from metal, this lamp appears weightless and defies its media of steel sheeting. Finally, a gilded iron finish or a bronze finish is applied. Each lamp is fitted with a drum shade and a matching starburst finial.
To call this a "novelty" floor lamp does not do it justice. This is a top quality lamp in every respect. It is heavy, well made, and it looks awesome. Even the packaging it came in was top-notch. The undulant shape of the Sunbird floor lamp is achieved when the wood is rotated on a machine to carve its outline. This requires great skill because it has to be manipulated at 90-degree angles to create both the smoothness of the surface and the knottiness of the shape. Ian Thornton was playing around with profiles to see what interesting shapes he might achieve when he conceived this graceful design. The tan lamp sits atop a metal base in a brass finish and is topped with an off-white shantung shade.
The knobby weave of water hyacinth that covers the Birdsong floor lamp takes an artisan a remarkable length of time to achieve to provide the surface with such visual consistency. Designed by Clarence Mallari, the rope floor lamp is statuesque in scale and is a cohesive composition with its finial that matches its body. An off-white linen drum shade adds to the incredible texture this woven floor lamp exudes.
